17 Weeks Pregnant Update
Baby is a: Turnip
Weight gained: 0 lb
Total Weight gained: 5 lbs
17 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms: I still have to pee ALL the time. I’ve finally reached the fun stage where I have to start getting up during the night to pee ☹
Cravings: I am drinking more water as that was my goal last week, but I would definitely not call this a craving. In general, I’m not craving specific foods but more of just needing to remember to eat frequently. If not, I get so hungry. I have started packing my bag full of just-in-case snacks like clementines, granola bars, trail-mix and apples.
Aversions: Same as previous weeks: No meat. No fish. And still not super excited about cooked veggies.
Sleep: Sleep is going okay. I am only comfortable sleeping on my side but that is usual for me.
Excited for: L’s last four teeth to finally break through. She is so miserable. They are all so close and it would be so nice for her and for me if she was done with the teething process. I can’t believe I am signing myself up to do this whole teething thing again.
Missing: Summer. I was already very over winter but now that I am starting to get bigger, it is just obnoxious to wear so many layers. I also have to do a lot of walking on campus (where I teach part-time), which is just 10 times worse in the cold when you are also uncomfortable. Luckily next week is supposed to be really nice. I can not wait to spend some quality time with L outside.
Movement: There have been a few times where I wasn’t quite sure if it was baby. It is usually when I am really still, like laying down in bed. I remember this was L’s favorite time to have a dance party in my belly. I would be almost asleep and all of a sudden, she would be bee-bopping for like a good 30 minutes. I was never able to sleep through that but I didn’t mind. I knew for only a very short time, I would be able to feel her kicks in my belly.
Dr. Update: No appointments this week.
Exercise: Nope
Stretch Marks: No
Swelling: No
Maternity Clothing: My (all-time favorite) maternity jeans from Stitch Fix are now fitting very well and I have to pick my shirts very carefully. Maternity shirts are huge on me. Normal shirts look awkward or are uncomfortable. I am in the weird phase!
Labor Signs: No
Wedding Rings On: Yes
Belly Button In or Out: In
How I’m Preparing: I can’t believe it has been 17 weeks. Some weeks I swear I think this pregnancy is going so slow and other weeks, I can’t believe how fast it’s going. As this is my second pregnancy, I have been spending a lot of time thinking back to L as a newborn. One of things I am happiest that I did was breastfeed L. It wasn’t easy, and I had no idea that there was a huge learning curve for both baby and I until it got easy. I spent countless hours reading academic papers, breastfeeding books and working with lactation consultants and at support groups. The reward for sticking out breastfeeding was that it gave me my most cherished memories with my baby. I am so excited to strive for the same breastfeeding goals with this one.
This week, Alli and I launched both a Free Email Breastfeeding Course and a condensed, yet complete, Breastfeeding Handbook. I encourage every mom who wants to breastfeed to learn as much as they can, starting now. Knowledge is power in succeeding at breastfeeding, it can make all the difference.
Best Moment of the Week: This week it was Valentine’s Day it didn’t go quite as planned. I was really hoping for frozen yogurt and wanted to get take-out from my favorite restaurant. However, the restaurant was closed, and we never made it to frozen yogurt. Instead, Cole was able to leave early from work and we met him for coffee, then stopped at our local farm to see their sheep, L’s favorite animal. She has named them Baaaa.
While not at all what I intended for the day, it was still an awesome day because we made time for each other, which matters more than anything to me. I know L will only be so little for such a short time and I want to make sure that in the busyness of life, we make sure to enjoy it. Cole also got her a balloon and she loved it.
